Petit Wildlife Haven

Compact beauty

This rear garden was totally re-landscaped with a pond, waterfall, rockery and new lawn with a rose bed. We designed and created a beautiful, functional and easy to maintain naturalist ecosystem pond that not only transformed the garden area but also encouraged a host of wildlife. A boring lawn area was transformed into an entertainment and relaxation space enjoyed by the client and her guests. This full garden design is a great example of what can be achieved in a compact space. Most gardens in the UK are relatively small and this feature will fit perfectly in the most petite of gardens.

Tranquil escape

The water begins at the head of the 1.5 meter stream in a hidden filter, and travels over three cascades of granite glacial boulders, through pooling areas and enters the small 2.5m x 1.5m pond below.

As with all of our water features, this pond should require no more maintenance than a garden lawn of a similar size. Poorly designed and traditionally built water features can create lots of problems for homeowners. Leaf and other organic matter fall to the bottom of the pond where it decays and causes water quality issues with green water and clogged pumps. Our method of water feature construction, on the other hand, turns the entire pond into a filter. As the oxygenated water flows over the rock work and cobbles it utilises a huge surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise, resulting in the whole feature working to break down excess nutrients.

Low growing planting

Low growing planting is used toward the front of the feature to soften the rock work but not hinder and views. The planting grows in height towards the back of the feature to add perspective, movement and depth. As with many of our planting designs we choose repeat planting of select species to draw the eye through the scape without distraction.

Natural flow of water

Floating debris including leaves and twigs are drawn into the skimmer rather than sinking to the bottom of the pond. Underwater jets add additional movement of the water to reduce stagnation areas.

Our system is designed to work with nature rather than against it. This method significantly reduces maintenance and hence more time is spent relaxing and enjoying the feature. You can read in more detail here how our low-maintenance Ecosystem ponds work.

Before
after

“Joe and Ben installed a pond in my quite small garden. They worked tirelessly to produce exactly what I wanted; a place where I could relax and enjoy the wonderful planting and the increased evidence of wildlife. The pond is easy to maintain and is the envy of my friends and family. One of my friends was even close to tears when she saw it - she loved it so much!”
