What began as a pond renovation evolved into a completely remodelled garden area with stunning surrounding landscaping and lush planting. We ripped out the old liner and filtration and demolished the brick retaining wall surrounding the site. We then levelled the excavation and lined the area with protective underlay and a new EPDM liner. The pond was lined with large granite glacial boulders and Scottish cobbles. The retaining wall was replaced with a large boulder rockery with a huge waterfall cascade twisting through it. The waterfall was framed with old gnarled olive trees that were underplanted with hundreds of ferns, lavenders and alpines among many other species. To one side of the rockery Millboard steps and a walkway leads the visitor up to a higher level where the cedar summer house is located. From this area here is a wonderful elevated view of the pond and waterfalls.
Pond Transformation Project: From Leaking Pond to Stunning Aquascape Ecosystem
This project aimed to transform an old, formal, leaking pond with poor water quality into a stunning Aquascape ecosystem pond. The result is a beautiful, low-maintenance natural lily pond that not only rejuvenated the garden but also became a thriving habitat for local wildlife and a perfect home for the client’s koi.
As with all of our water features, this pond should require no more maintenance than a garden lawn. Poorly designed and traditionally built water features can create lots of problems for homeowners. Leaf and other organic matter falls to the bottom of the pond where it decays and causes water quality issues. Our method of water feature construction turns the entire pond into a filter, as the oxygenated water flows over the rock work and cobbles creating a huge surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise, resulting in the whole feature working to break down excess nutrients.
Floating debris including leaves and twigs are drawn into the skimmer rather than sinking to the bottom of the pond. The system is designed to work with nature rather than against it. This method significantly reduces maintenance and hence more time is spent relaxing and enjoying the feature. You can read in more detail here how our low-maintenance Ecosystem ponds work.
